Goings On Around the Clubhouse

Winter stills lingers at the snow-covered Kempton Clubhouse, but the rooms are warm though the windows may be frosty. The new kitchen window and back door are keeping out the cold. The Arizona clubhouse and offices remain sunny and warm by day, but it cools off considerably at night.

I just returned from a WEX excursion to Mexico during which we vistited Olmec and Mayan sites. It was a great time checking out the pyramids and megaliths in the Olmec areas near Veracruz on the Gulf Coast. We drove into the volcanic mountains around Santiago de Tuxtla where the Olmecs quarried and made their 20-ton heads. We finished the trip at the Temple of Inscriptions, Lord Pacal’s tomb at Palenque, a site that the whole group acknowledged was fantastic.

We are not sure where the next WEX trip will be going. We have a trip to Carnac and Brittany (in France) in the works plus an expedition to Bali, Komodo Island and other parts of eastern Indonesia. Stay tuned to the Upcoming Events page.

Jennifer was in Portugal on the island of Madeira where she celebrated New Years Eve with her old friend Cathy, who was having a special birthday party. She says the fireworks were spectacular and so close that they ended up with blasting caps on their veranda! I rang in the New Year here at the Arizona WEX clubhouse with my special guests Giorgio Tsoukalos and his wife Krix Beeble. We played pool and even foosball with some other guests. Giorgio, like many Swiss people, is a champion foosball player.

I had a great time at the Earth-Keeper conference in Little Rock, Arkansas, November 17 to 20. Old friends Graham Hancock and John Van Auken were there as well, along with the amazing James Tyberonn and over 20 other speakers.

We had a great trip to Bangkok, Kathmandu, Agra and Delhi last fall. We met up with WEX member Lee Sullivan in New Delhi and our group made a trip on the new expressway to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Afterwards, some of our group flew back to the USA from Kathmandu while a few of us flew to Chitwan National Park in southern Nepal and rode elephants while searching for rhinos, deer and wild peacocks. Thanks to WEX manager Govinda Panta for helping put together the itinerary and covering the details.

After consulting Mike Migliore, who runs WEX Club Cruises, we are changing the date for our 11-day expedition to Antarctica to December 2018 or 2019. Stand by for exact dates. We have had several people express interest but they have not signed up for one reason or another. Let us know if you have any questions or need some personal attention. We will be happy to help and get a great group together! We will fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina and then fly to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. From there we will embark on a double-hulled exploration ship and spend five full days in Antarctica with lots of shore excursions. All excursions, meals and drinks are included in the package. Lots of special presentations will be given by me and others on this cruise. This might be the time to cross Antarctica off your bucket list! Check out the web pages at: www.wexclubcruises.com

Sadly, the Amsterdam bookstore, Frontier World, has ceased operations. The director, Herman Hegge is not able to continue with the shop because of a sudden illness. He is currently in a special care center in Holland. We all wish Herman a full recovery!

Tourism in Nepal saw a big bounce in 2017, good news for WEX Manager Govinda Panta. We enjoyed our recent trip there and are looking forward to a yeti expedition into the Arun Valley in 2019. Help infuse some tourist dollars into the economy, and go when convenient for you. Govinda can make trekking arrangements and any other travel plans.
